Here’s a look at Elyria’s history, some fun facts about the city, and some fun activities you can enjoy in the area.

History

Elyria was first founded in 1817 by Heman Ely, nestled in the forks of the Black River. Ely built a log house, dam, gristmill, and sawmill, attracting many European-American settlers looking for a new home. Because of his involvement in the building of the town, the residents decided to name it in honor of Ely.

Over the next four decades, Elyria continued to expand with manufacturing businesses that provided goods and services to the farmers in the surrounding areas. Even now, it continues to flourish as a prime location for those commuting into Cleveland.

Things to Do

Cascade Park

Considered the largest park in Elyria, Cascade Park is a lovely place to visit with family. The park’s land was created by the glaciers that also created the Great Lakes and, because it’s centered around the Black River, it provides a peaceful get away filled with natural beauty. Grab the kids to enjoy the large playground or head there during the winter months for some sledding.

Black River Reservation

To truly enjoy the natural beauty that Lorain County has to offer, head to Black River Reservation. This park is considered one of the most popular in the area, providing visitors with three picnic areas and over five miles of paved all-purpose trails that wind along the Black River. If you’re looking to head to the Day’s Dam area, you can even grab a tram service if you’re unable to walk.
